The Midjourney Creative Process (AI Art)

Opponents of images generated using AI art tools tend to deny the impact of the human creator on the image creation process. For that reason, I’d like to share my process for generating some festive fairy art today, one week before Christmas Eve. It’s not simple input/output. In my mind, photography makes for the best metaphor, so that’s the language I’ll use.

What would you like to create today?

I like using the fae as subjects because of how my gender and disabilities inform my identity. I also know the styles of art I like and don’t like. Midjourney v4 has a default style I’m not quite fond of, and sometimes I forget that, so my first attempts at any given subject can give me some rather undesirable results.

On a whim today, I wanted to create a scene with faeries at a Christmas party. Verbs are important for art direction in Midjourney, so I decided that the fairies should be dancing around a Christmas tree.

Attempt #1

Grid of four images generated by a Midjourney v4 prompt
Prompt: beautiful fairies dancing around a christmas tree, vivid colors, intricate details

I really dislike this style, but I realized that including “intricate details” might have been part of the problem. So I stripped the prompt down a bit.

Attempt #2
