About That Term: Birthing People

On March 22, 2023, Executive Producer and Host of The Young Turks, Ana Kasparian tweeted the following:

Tweet reads: I’m a woman. Please don’t ever refer to me as a person with a uterus, birthing person, or person who menstruates. How do people not realize how degrading this is? You can support the transgender community without doing this shit.

…And my Twitter feed blew up. I made the mistake of replying to one of the resulting threads that my mutuals were engaging with, and I’m still getting bigots in my mentions almost a month later.

Here’s the thing. It’s the thread I just typed up in my response to the latest bigot.

(Don’t like me referring to people as bigots? People need to stop putting their bigotry out there in public for everyone to see, especially waving it in my face by specifically replying to me.)

Why Clinical Terminology isn’t Degrading

Apparent photo of a pregnant woman or other pregnant person with long brown hair, a nice smile, and a prominent baby bump suggesting the third trimester of pregnancy. She is wearing a stretchy maternity t-shirt with a gray cardigan over it. The background is dark on the left side of her and a foggy pink on the right side of her. I’m a nonbinary person who got pregnant, gave birth, used a hormonal IUD as birth control and more, and recently had my uterus and ovaries removed.

In no way do the terms “women’s healthcare” include me. I’m a PERSON who gave birth, had a uterus, etc.

When I go to the eye doctor, does it degrade me for her to refer to my eyes? No. Does “eye health” or “vision care” accurately describe the services my ophthalmologist provides? Yes. Does…
